The Bomber and Gucci Styling

Happy Friday loves, we made it!

It has been a crazy busy, intense time for me here in NYC. Perhaps for you as well.? As the political ambiance fades into the surreal,  I am struck with the need to organize, - can you relate?-
and to distract. So I have been dressing up and seeing friends, gazing up, whenever I can,  from the rooftop terrace.

Today I am wearing a mash-up between Gucci, H&M, and Marks&Spencer

Preview the look!

The skirt is from last year, and I have to confess, the midi length is not optimal for me, unless I am wearing towering heels.  But is has pockets! But I wore want I wanted , and this is the result. I got my cool bomber jacket from Marks & Spencer, a site that I am loving because it's products are seldom seen in the USA, are well priced, and just a bit ahead, style wise , than comparable US mid-level stores.

The outfit is not so crazy expensive because the jacket was well priced and was 20% off. The sweater , which is sold out now, was also very inexpensive and well made from the kids department. A similar sweater is here.  Further, my gorgeous silk and crystal bag was thrifted for $12. USD in Long Island at LVIS. My skirt from H&M, was also inexpensive.  The boots, were pricey, but I love them. Really, Love Love Love them. Gucci is killing it this season!

Also, can you see the woman behind me with the over the knee boots and shopping bags, and perfectly cut hair. I love that women really dress up in this city. I know she is faded into the background, but these are the lovely creatures that populate my neighborhood. Rock on!

Now, more than ever, is the time to embrace beauty, whether it is dressing a certain way, or artfully presenting a dinner plate, or buying fresh flowers for your bedroom. Now is the time to wander outside and notice the sunset or sunrise, the ribbons of colors that thread the sky at dusk and dawn, and the majestic buildings of the city's landscape. Oh, the long shadows they cast this time of year!

If you live in a rural place you can see the sunset without any obstruction, the wavy bend of the grasses, giving way to winter, and the blanching of leaves in warm autumnal tones. Breathe it in.

Now is the time to take stock and pull your loved ones in, closely.

Sorry for the sudden shift into the world outside fashion, but these days are so charged with change, and ambiguity. I could not be me, without saying something of this. Back to my outfit... A shot of my thrifted bag, a bit of the trim from my jacket, and the texture of the car which I liked in this shot.

Below a a close up of my vintage Gucci sunnies. I love the reflection that you can see in them. I am not wearing make-up other than lipstick, so please forgive my bare face and less than perfect braids.

I wish you a good and peaceful weekend; a joyous one, filled with love and warmth.

Dichotomy: Pleated Plaid: Romantic Floral

HELLO! I hope you are having a wonderful week. I had photos taken indoors one day last week as it was so windy. The indoor lighting was tricky,  -which means the shadows did mean things to my face- and I almost didn't post this, but the last photo is something I think you will want to see.

I am wearing an eclectic sort of Mui Mui look here, with my pleated, plaid skirt, and romantic floral blouse from Marks&Spencer.com.  I added argyle socks to my patent and snake mary janes that I found on eBay in my tiny size. I have had this skirt a while. By that, I mean 3 decades, give or take! The belt has is trimmed in pearls and shaped in a bow.

Yes, there is a lot going on here.

Have you met my dog Lucy? She is going to be fourteen. I am rather nuts about her! When I am home, she never leaves my side. Sweet pup!

Below a close up of most of what I am wearing.

The grand finale, is my cute dog ! She still runs with me across the street where it is quiet. Not bad for an old bitch, right?  Yes, you can read that however you like.

Happy Mid-Week! Be safe and well, my lovely fashionistas!

Tropical Prints All Around

Hello lovely friends. I hope this week has winded down to a quiet rush of excitement for a relaxing getaway, wherever that might take you, even if it is a cozy nook in your own home.  I wanted to share my tropical print dress, that I wore to the Hamptons, last weekend,  for dinner.

The dress was a lucky find at LVIS In East Hampton. I didn't even try it on. I have a good eye for what will fit me, I am lucky that way.  We made reservations at our favorite eatery,  c/o THE MAIDSTONE,  and I pulled on the dress and it fit perfectly and was super comfortable.

I paired the tropical print dress with strappy gold sandals, with block heels. Because of the delicate straps on the dress, I did not add a necklace. A python, cross body bag added some texture, and complimented the colors and the theme, which I did not really know I was building.

I like that the bag converts to a clutch and has a pretty bow in the middle. It also came from LVIS.

A close up shot shows that I sort of blend it with the decor. This was a happy coincidence.

Outside is the prettiest walkway to the restaurant. What a lovely welcome!

Next time i will wear it strapless, the elastic is perfect. I can then add a necklace or simple leather cord choker, or maybe long earrings, and no necklace? And i will tie a bow at the waist!  I hope you have a fabulous weekend!

Summer Celebrations!

There seems to be so much to celebrate lately. Nationally, it was the Fourth of July, and personally,  there were happy occasions. A close friend had a big birthday, and my son got his Master's Degree. I am sincerely happy and proud.

We all celebrated at a local restaurant. In these heels it had to be close by! I wore a foulard printed babydoll dress. I know, I know...  I am a bit on the "mature" side, but I did,  and I don't regret it. It is by Billabong, a company that excels in beachwear and fabulous little summer dresses!

I love the quiet ruffle and the mixed prints, and I also appreciated a bit of sleeve.  The striped bag added even more pattern mixing, and I added a floral brooch that reminds me of Chanel. It is made by Suzanne Carillo , a very talented blogging friend. I enjoy her blog so much, her writing is crisp and her sense of humour,  as well as style, is sophisticated and fresh. And boy can she shop! ( we both love thrift stores!)

Some serious heels keep me on my toes! Truly! As high as they are,  they are not too bad to walk in; the cork sole is super soft, and the generous platform does not make my arch scream. I love to be a bit taller than I am. These are by Gomax, via Zulily.com. and are about 2years old.

My iolite cocktail ring is from KC Signatures in Manhattan.

My striped bag reminds me of a Henri Bendel shopping bag! I bought it wholesale, in the flatiron district ( if you buy over $100, they give you good discounts)  at Just Fantastic. Ask for David there. You have to create an account and have a resale number, or be shopping with someone who does.   You can also do this online, if you are not in NY. If you go there, take a quick detour to the flower district, heaven! This is how I came across these shops!

Unlike some of the online sites that offer inexpensive bags and clothes, this company is based in NYC, and employs a good number of US residents, it does not go direct from China to US, skipping the US work pool altogether. And while I do not like to buy so many made in China merchandise, this is a good source for gifts and pieces that much for expensive in chain stores.

My friend, the birthday girl,  also enjoys politics, so the discussion at dinner was lively!   I was going to buy flowers for the table, but at the last minute decided to get balloons. So much more festive, as was the bubbly Rose Prosecco! Yum!

I am not a fan of babydoll dresses in general, but this one spoke to me, as it is more of mixed media mini with a ruffle. Babydoll dresses, carefully selected, can be cute, especially when worn with pointy flats of flip flops. Mine is not backless , does not have cut outs or a deep v, like many of the babydoll dresses you see. Others like this, that I love, are here, here, and here.

This particular babydoll dress also looks like an A-line shift in mixed prints, so if you like this dress you can shop it,  in those search terms, choosing a fit and length you like.  Actually it is only the empire waist and ruffle that puts this dress in that category. Today,  babydoll dresses are pretty generic: there is one for most everyone. They also look great over jeans or denim shorts. For the beach, you can choose one that is a bit sheer and lighter weight.

So what have you been celebrating recently? I hope it is many things at once! How do you feel about this 70's trend coming back and being re-imagined as a Boho staple in mixed prints and often times, embroidery or crochet.? Will you wear a version? : Let me know. You know how!

Oh, and by the way, my dress was $8.00 form LVIS in East Hampton!  :)

White Maxi Dress \\ Summer Style

I love a quiet spot at the beach, with no noise, other than the wind swishing gently at the nearby brush, and birdsong. The sun is warm on my face. The breeze is just the right amount of pleasant. This is when I wear white.

A white maxi can be perfect without accessories for someone who has a darker complexion, or someone with deep tan. For me, I needed a hat, both for a pop of color and sun protection. I also brought along an embroidered bag with pom pom trim, just for access to my phone ( on vibrate) car keys, a credit card, and a case for my sunnies.

I like the pleating, and the white on white embroidery of this dress by Blue Bird, ( Anthropologie). It looks perfect by itself, is fully lined, and is simple, or as simple as I ever dress. The good news is that I bought it 2 years ago, with the original tags, and 2/3 less than the original price at Anna's and Around Again, on the Wharf in sag harbor, you can visit them on Instagram @avas_around_again . I also got my earrings there, and Joy Susan hat. I did not get the sand there, though, or the perfect day that topped out at 78*.

This is the last you will see of these sunnies.  :(  I crushed a stem while putting groceries on top of my bag).  See, that is why I hate to grocery shopping, and should ALWAYS eat out. Right? Oh well,  I got two years out of them and replaced them with a pair of Chanel sunnies in black from Medusa In East Hampton. Lucky for me they were half- off.

Some snaps of the accessories, and I will leave you to enjoy your weekend!

Nedra wears Boho-Glam at Elite Home NYC

The best and most versatile trend this season is the maxi. It can be styled with flats for the beach, or heels for the roof top bar. Nedra wears it at Elite Home NYC, in her own exuberant style: glamorous, with touch of sass!

The silk halter maxi is divinely comfortable; it moves and drapes so beautifully. It is my favorite fabric for a maxi. This one is Alice and Trixie, purchased two seasons ago at STA in Manhattan's UES at 1318 Madison Avenue. Nedra is wearing a vintage Versace bracelet and an amber and diamond ring from Mexico, as well as a lapis and white sapphire ring from KC signatures, that is one of a kind. The box bag was purchased near me, if it is still available I will add the link!

Nedra is one of a kind!

Summer Maxi Dress for the Beach

Happy Monday Loves! I hope you were blessed with the same weather that I am enjoying of late. I wore a black maxi for a beach stroll, and for lunch later nearby, overlooking the water. I choose all black,  a simple necklace, t-straps with gems, and straw hat of course.

I bought the appliquèd straw bag, right across the street at Anna and Around Again, just an hour before these shots were taken. How I love that store.

It was breezy that day. It felt good but did not do good things for my hair. Thank heavens for hats! Without the hat, my hair totally forgot that I had it in hot rollers an hour ago! Whoops!

OK, so I was feeling creative. My black maxi needed something. ( It doesn't really, I was just in a mood to decorate-  you know me and my love of maximalism, and creativity. ) I wish I knew photoshop; I was learning, and then real life got in the way. But I do have an app that allows for double exposure. So this was born.

And that, led of course, to this.

And this will be the opening shot for my next creative writing contest. Awards going out soon, sorry I was away!

How are you wearing your maxi's? I like that this one is mostly lined, since I can not wear a bra with the off the shoulder look. Do you wear heels, flats, or boots? Print, or solid?  What is your Ideal maxi dress? Let me know!

Dancing on a Cloud: St.Cloud, that is.

I was invited to a cocktail hour at St.Cloud, a sophisticated, plush and urban destination - high atop the Knickerbocker Hotel in Times Square. The walls of greenery were splendid and exotic;  the three corner pods looked elegant, and ensured a bit of privacy for conversation too.

The attire was "festive floral" so I went with a simple black Helmut Lang dress, an embroidered and appliqued floral coat, nude pumps - thank you Naturalizer for making them comfy enough to dance!- and a jade and pearl necklace by KC Signatures. It was drizzling a bit when I arrived, but by 9:30 it was perfect outside and very lively!

It was windy,  dusky and drizzling, but you can see I am having fun just looking around. I think I look a bit like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. ( or her grand mum, as I approach my 58th this summer.)

I have wondered of late, what I might look like with pink highlights, Courtesy of some bewitching neon lights, I now know!

Clearly I am looking for Toto.

Inside there were some beauties wearing flower crowns. I just kept my flower appliqued sunnies on instead.. Lots of dancing, and superb passed Hors d'oeuvres.

Upon entering I was greeting graciously. ( This translates to-  I was promptly given free Sangria. YUM!

I was assigned a comfy place to sit to let my eyes adjust, and then I ventured out.

I loved looking out, the view was stupendous, but the decor of St Cloud was sublime as well, lush green walls with verdant red flowers, and inviting outdoor banquettes.

I took some of these photos with my LG phone and even got a shot of of my photographer! He was wearing floral, it was the least I could do! Readers meet Gerardo Vitale, a great photographer and musician.

I had a wonderful time at St. Cloud, and the Knickerbocker hotel looks quite nice. I want to thank Kelly for inviting me. The music was amazing., and I love to dance. I recommend this place ( all opinions are my own).

Now to go backwards, I wore a slightly different version of this before I left. Different sunnies, and necklaces, and location... such a different look!  Context, lighting,  and back round make such a difference in a photo.

You can see my appliqued floral bag here, a older one from Cole Haan. Very on trend, though and perfect for the "floral festive" theme. My emerald bracelets from KC Signatures add a pop of green, which gets a bit lost in the shots at the hotel. Here, you can see them well.

But, DID YOU NOTICE, in these shots I wore the jacket inside out! The pretty appliques were hiding. And you thought I was getting fat!

So where are your favorite outdoor spots for nightlife? Do you like rooftop views, or do you prefer not to be so high up? Do you like to dance?  Have you tried Naturalizer ( this is also my own opinion) for dancing? Let me know. You know how!

NYC Rooftop Style

Last week,  hubby and I invited friends to join us at our roof top, briefly before dinner. It is quiet up there, perhaps because it was late. It is so nice to have access to a quiet place in the city.

I call this look Demi-Glam, because while most the items are ornate, or embellished, there is still a casual vibe to the outfit.

The stripe tee by J.Crew and the flatforms keep things down a notch. The beading on the skirt is a bit fancy, and a lovely thing to admire on its own. ( on sale from H&M !)  The sleeveless vest is in a damask pattern, again a bit fancy, and the caning on the bag, from Novica.com,  a nice detail I think!  The handle lends an organic note with the golden "branch motif. This is a very eclectic outfit: my style.

Are you familiar with the site Novica.com? This is a site that creates a worldwide marketplace for handcrafted artisans, offering fair prices and sustainability. I bought this bag over a year ago, and have enjoyed using it. It is not a bag I will likely see on anyone else, and it was not too expensive. It is, you might say, the antithesis of an "It Bag".

I try to put my consumer dollars to good work. I seldom buy from behemoth chains stores, but alas, I do sometimes, and the skirtabove,  is proof there of.

Here are a couple of snaps of the rooftop terrace .

I wish you were here to join me!! I have a lovely Rosé chilling in the refrigerator. Let me take my rings, off, wash my hands, and pour a glass.

Embellishment: Challenge and Contest

Her mind was whirring tempestuously, even though her feet were planted firmly on the rocky path. What just happened, she wondered. To her chagrin and embarrassment, she wondered this aloud and to no one. Soon, it would be clear. She knew this fully. But for now she could not shake this eerie foreboding that something major was about to change..

The nice thing about being an independent blogger is that you can talk about whatever you feel like. There is no limit to what one can discuss when thinking about fashion, how one imagines things may change based on how we appear. Its true. And it is the stuff of glossy magazine and novels.

But it does not matter here. I am making this story up just because I wanted to. Now I want you to finish it. Whoever does this best, gets a prize. Really. A necklace. A nice one. Or a small hand bag, You choose. But first you must write.

I can't wait to choose the winner, because I love sending gifts to friends. Now back to the mundane details of my OOTD. I am not wearing anything fancy. But my embellished jacket with the lace on the sleeves is s nice detail. I enjoyed adding this to my simple outfit. I also liked the color and softness of my racing striped bag. The tassel is done in pony hair which is as bristly as the leather is smooth. I love contrasts.

I also like that there is contrast to the jacket: the casual vibe of the denim, rendered sparkly and feminine with the black lace and beads. Contrast is what makes things interesting and substantial. Embellishment makes a simple thing more striking.

Some snaps of the bag and jacket sleeve:

This little bag is from Shoptiques, and online source that allows one to shop small boutiques from around the world. I love their merchandise , and also the fact that this helps the smaller merchant. My denim jacket is from Workshop, also a small chain of stores in Manhattan that curates beautifully.

Now back to the metaphorical; lets think about context. See the bag above and below. Does it not look different indoors on marble, and outdoors on pebbles?  I think so. YOU?

I based a Polyvore set around this outfit. Check it out here.  I love Polyvore! Here is a photo of the shopping links for inspiration.

Now get writing! I know there are some gifted writers among my followers. Consider it a contest for the holiday weekend! ( those in the US). The contest is for anyone, from any country.

Enter the Lace Palazzo Pant

The long sweep of trouser leg, the openwork of lace, the breezy cropped peasant blouse,  gathering in gauzy billows at the wrists. Add to it, the smell of pine in the air. What could be better? Enter the loungy Palazzo Pant.

The peasant blouse is vintage. Before BOHO was BOHO, and girls wore "hippie clothes" and tie-dye they made themselves. I added a sweet floral bag in lieu of the, shall-we- say, ubiquitous, flower crown.

Hubbie graciously took a few snaps on my LG phone camera. No make up today, not a stitch. Well, okay, a swipe of Lancome's Juicy Tubes in Pure. Hmm. Looks like I could have done with a bit of rouge.

I am in a hurry. I have some place to be. My lounge chair. The sun is out and it is warmish. Just warm enough to sit outside and get some sun on my cold shoulders. Not enough to turn them bronze. Never that.

I am in my front yard.  I am so happy to be out this weekend. The sun is not out yet, but it is peeking at me, tomorrow it shall be here. But today there are glimpses ( not enough light for better resolution, sorry, but no mid day shadows either). Just the hint of sun is enough.

The pretty lacey openwork of the palazzo pants. My toenails in the same shade of bisque.

Peasant blouse, vintage via Around Again. Similar here.

My floral bag was a gift from a dear friend, made by Banana Republic. Gucci did similar abgs this season, but they are so pricey. I like this one from Etsy.

Cold Snap

Just when I think Spring is here,  and warm temps could be relied upon: Snap, the wind whipped up and the mercury plummeted. I had bought this Boho paisley tunic to wear with sandals, and hoped to wear it on a beach, or on my way to one. Instead...

I layered it under a furry red vest and zipped on retro looking suede boots. It was still lovely out, and I had things to do. I should know by now NOT to to rely on the weather! I added a hat when the wind was at its most menacing.

Still I had to hold onto it!

I was challenged to make this summer look work for a cooler day. I will wear this next on a warmer day, or better yet, give it to my daughter! It will look better on her, and she has an Island trip coming up! Sandy toes will be the only accessory needed next time!

Outfit details: Paisley tunic via De Janerio on Lexington. Furry red vest, (Lined in tangerine satin!) from Workshop Leather, 107 East 59th St. NY, NY.  Druzy and studded necklace / statement ring via KC Signatures.com . Patchwork bag via LVIS In East Hampton. Suede boots with buckles by Opulent, via Poshmark. Nails by Butter London, color Toff, via Nordtrom.com.

Spring is the BOMB !

The snow is behind us and I am happy to the core , that spring is truly here. Still, cool mornings and evenings, require some layering, and isn't that what we fashionistas do best? I will start with some 3 season standards: Pleather or leather culottes, leather bomber, striped tee, messenger bag.

My perforated shoes are the giveaway that the warm temps are truly here. Despite the platform sandals, and the fact that I am standing on a bench, I am still standing on tip-toes! ( I am not in denial about my teeny tiny size, she says, lacking any conviction what-so-ever)!

And yes, I am standing in a bus stop where well mannered people sit and stare at their I phones. Did I use some anti-bacterial wipes to clean ,where my feet have been, after the shoot?  Well that is for me to know, and you to ponder.

This particular day I had been a bit uptown, and then later, to the Upper East Side. Are you my Uber, I think? How many darn black suburbans are there In Manhattan, I wonder. Alot. So so many! A UUGE number. I know because I am expert, and therefore do not have to consult any other experts, because the number is (H) UGE.  ( sorry, too much TV)

A glimpse of my light-weight, height enhancers! ( some call them shoes)  Love the studs. A rare shot when someone is not in my space. Normally legions of passerbys are joining me in my photos. But my photographer is patient! Thanks Geraldo!

It is bright, so I added my old reliables.  ( by that I mean my vintage Gucci sunnies, what did you think I was referring to?) My leather bomber jacket is off, I mean business now. The serious and happy business of Spring.

See my stripes! Spring!

See my smile. Spring!

I look a bit stiff, like a mannequin in a senior citizens shop, ( does AARP do retail?)  tilted a bit by an addled shopper. Okay, I will hop back down to the street now.  I have had enough fun for now.

My bomber is back on, but my scarf, so neatly tied in a bow, is now askew. That is okay, I like how it looks in the breeze. Spring is all about the breezes, and not caring if your perfectly tied bow becomes un-knotted, right? ( I think that is right, but maybe there is a panel of experts I should consult, maybe there is a recent poll...)

Now the shopping bag rests. ( I have a thing for Lavender and purple Bergdorf's bags) I know you want to know what is inside. And you will. Soon, after the caucus meets, and I get a expert opinion on when is the best time to announce such matters of such weight and import.

For those of you not following the US political circus, I apologize about my thinly veiled attempts at snark. Call it a coping mechanism.

Outfit details- Pleather culottes Zara, striped tee from CrewCuts. circa 2011, if memory serves. Vintage Gucci sunnies can be found on Ebay. You can refer back to this post for the link on the shoes. The paisley scarf was a gift from a friend. The leather bomber is by Knoles and Carter, also older. See the links below for additional shopping ideas.

You can take this look into summer by choosing culottes in cotton, and later to shorts. Swap the silk scarf for a cotton bandana. Keep the stripes though, it is not summer with out them!

Hush ** Blush

There are days when the loudest sound we will hear is a whisper, the brightest color we can manage is a soft muted blush. When we dress,  we choose loose,  soft, and indulgent. I was in such a state last week.

My curls. tight last night and full of bounce, wandered down my back in loose waves. I let it be. I chose kitten heels with quiet soles, and waves of gray sequins that remind me of the sunset at night, when the moon is full.

It was cold, harsh and windy outside. I stayed indoors, depriving myself of the rush of adrenaline that hits me when I step into the city streets. I did not need that today.  Today will be quiet, reflective. Shhh. Hush.

My loose dress and blush shawl look like lingerie worn inside. It is not. So much of what we infer is contextual, no? The workmanship and soft burnout velvet is soft of my skin. If this were a dropped waist silhouette,  you would see something like this on Downton Abbey.

I will only read my sweetest book. It is a book of photos taken by my daughter, when she traveled abroad a few years back. Her inscription to me, was so thoughtful, so dear, I can not tell it here.  I do not trust it's sweetness will translate intact and whole, to this page.

I will put my things down for a bit.

And when I stand again, I shall listen with only one ear; the one that works and brings me sound. I won't begrudge my condition, I will only feel gratitude that I can hear the sound of laughter and conversation. The annoying sound of traffic is hushed by half.  No I will not make less, or more, of hearing only half.

The day will stay quiet. hush..

Photos by Geraldo Vitale and hair by my friend Shelly.

Have a wonderful week!              XX, Elle
