In my white satin dress I feel light, summery and hopeful. The sun is shining and while headlines veer from curious to alarming, I try to maintain my composure and perspective. The outsized police presence is always there to remind me, even as I walk to yoga to find my Zen.
This shot was taken just before my sister’s wedding and I was thinking about what to wear. I ultimately decided that this white satin dress would be too formal and too “bridal ” to wear, but I was glad to see that it still fit! These new statement earrings were ones I found when I wrote a recent post about the oversized earring trend. That’s the danger of looking for shopping links!
From Outnet.com these earrings were too good to passed up .I am a fan of Ben Amun. I also love a special accent, and a visual focal point when I style an outfit.
Handmade appliqué work is beautiful in my estimation. How I love the texture and the dimensionality of it. I also like the neutral color of this jacket as a bold color in this look, could be a bit over the top. I bought this on eBay years ago and it is a go-to piece when I am looking for a light and luxe layer.
Below a snap of the jacket that provides more detail. Nude patent leather pumps with a modified block heel were comfortable and safe!
I bought this white statin dress at STA years ago. Perhaps it was custom made, as the size is not customary for a 0 or 2, and it has boning. It also had no tags. It fits like it was made for me, and was priced very low because of its diminutive sizing. Hurrah for little victories!
Pleating detail defines my small waist and adds a nice bespoke touch . My favorite feature, however, is the pockets! Yes to a bit of slouch when no-one is looking !
Belt buckle bracelets have also been a lifelong favorite. I wish I could wear an Hermés bracelet, but my wrist is too small. I am wearing a pretty one that I bought locally. Pictured below, this bracelet tells the story of my “cautionary tale” which I am guessing you presumed would be about a weightier topic.
No, I am staying away from the political arena and the crazy stormy weather we have been experiencing and what that might portend. Too anxiety provoking to discuss on this fashion blog.
Look at the size of this sidewalk crack near me! It is quite wide and maybe 10 inches deep. Any stiletto wearing fashionista could be hospitalized, if she were not looking down. I have osteoporosis, and I shudder to think what would happen if I did this shoot on the sidewalk, as I often do, and in pumps with a stiletto heel . My bracelet is about one inch wide!
Yow and yikes, she whispers to herself . Please look down ladies, when you visit manhattan! Better yet, wear sneakers!
On the rooftop terrace I sip green juice and I feel grateful.
Shop the white satin dress!
My favorite and the most reasonably priced is below by Nanette Lepore. It is a great bargain and is styled in a timeless way.
Below this paneled dress is a splurge and might be good as a bridal dress.
Below, a second-hand score from the Real Real!
What say you dear readers? Did I do the right thing by NOT wearing this dress to the wedding? Wedding dress protocol is changing rapidly, both for the bride and the guests. What is your take?
I hope you are enjoy this splendid new week!

My friends just returned from Europe and were saying the same things about the cobblestone pavements…you have to look where you’re going.
It’s hard when you’re with people and talking, but i’m better about it when I’m alone.
And those earrings are amazing. I find that same problem when I’m writing a post and linking to items—-it’s a struggle for sure!!

yes, LOL to the shopping temptations of finding links. It is important that we pay close attention to what is below us.

Uneven sidewalks or sidewalk grates are terrible. I’ve seen people fall down into those weird open holes (I’m not sure if you call them cellars or storage areas) that so many of the shops have in NYC in front of their store. If pedestrians don’t watch where they are going they fall straight down. It is very dangerous.
You look lovely in cream. Those earrings tho!

Yes those open grates are a danger and add to that the sidewalk cracks that I have never seen quite like this. I’m so glad you like my earrings. I was so happy to find them. Have a wonderful week ahead.
❤️ Elle
That is a very dangerous crack!
But what a stunning outfit. What a magnificent dress! And I adore the bracelets, I love buckled bracelets too!
Yes these bracelets are a long time favorite of mine also. The sidewalks in Manhattan are really a mess.
❤️ Elle
Yes a white satin dress may not be the best choice for a wedding but how gorgeous is this one. And yes I like the bone colored jacket and shoes and those bracelets are so edgy. I know a jewelry designer who makes something similar and i thought about picking one one up. And can you believe NYFW is right around the corner?

Yes I don’t think this is appropriate for a wedding. I ended up going with a floral maxi. This summer is certainly flying by.
❤️Elle
I would not have worn this dress to the wedding – it does read as “bridal” even if the bride isn’t wearing white. I have an upcoming wedding in September and I’m thinking a bright bold colour will be nice.
You look gorgeous in this dress, Elle! I love the loose outer-coat! Zoiks, that’s a huge crack in the sidewalk. Now, imagine that men were the ones wearing stilettos – do you think that crack would still be there?? Hmmm…
Absolutely correct. I ended up wearing a floral maxi. It ended up feeling very comfortable and appropriate. The sidewalks in Manhattan are so frightening.
❤️ Elle
The lace details are so pretty!

Thanks so much!
I love this older appliqué jacket !
❤️ Elle
I think your ensemble is beautiful and elegant. For weddings, I avoid wearing white or black. Both seem to be a bit scene-stealing in my book.
I appreciate your honest reply. You are quite correct. I ended up wearing a floral maxi dress. Have a wonderful new week.
❤️ Elle
What a beautiful dress! I really really like that lovely lace topper with it too, so pretty!
I have tripped and stumbled in heels so many times – it’s easy, especially with huge cracks in the pavement like that! Flat shoes are my go-to most of the time now!
Hope you are having a good start to your week! 🙂 I have a quieter week planned after it was so busy last week!

Yes to flat shoes and being safe. Happy new week!

What a beautiful white dress.
I have new update for my blog

Looking forward to seeing it!

I think you are a vision in this dress and jacket. A princess, a bride, a fairy tale figure. So NO, you could not wear this to a wedding. You would most certainly outstage the bride. And that is not nice. We have the rule in Holland not to wear a white dress to a wedding. Or anything white really. I made a faux pas once, wearing a white trouser suit. I had worn it to the office and went straight from work to the wedding reception. I did think about it (too late) just before I left the office… Read more »
I just can’t imagine you hiding in a corner. Yes I did think better of this and ended up wearing a floral maxi dress. Thank you for your excellent advice!
❤️ Elle
Elle you look gorgeous in this wonderful white dress. And these earrings are stunning! Better you wear sneakers in germany too 😉
XOXO Tina
Thanks so much Tina!
Yes it is important to be careful and wearing sneakers is spelled fashionable and protective.
❤️ Elle
Oh my, that sidewalk crack looks lethal. Better be careful there! I love your pretty dress, and how tiny your waist is! The earrings and jacket are both stunning. I’m glad you decided against this outfit for the wedding, though. Gorgeous as it is, it might be a bit too bridal, and you might upstage the bride. That said, I’m longing to know what your outfit of choice was! xxx
Ann,
Yes you are correct. This was much too bridal for a wedding. I ended up wearing a floral maxi dress. The sidewalks can be very dangerous so I am careful to be alert !
❤️ Elle
Honestly, those NYC streets. When will they think to redo some of them, when God forbid someone gets injured?! Ridiculous! I’ve ruined a few good pairs of shoes because of them. Anyway, I love your dress and I absolutely adore those earrings!

Jalisa,
Yes this sidewalks can be treacherous. The gap was so wide that even someone with a cane might fall!

Wow, what a pretty dress!
Thanks, second hand of course, and several years old!

I am already a very clumsy person so I gotta be extra precatious with uneven sidewalks! I absolutely love the satin white dress you’re wearing, so classy!

Elle,
I adore this whole look. So elegant and feminine on you. The dress does look like it was made for you , love the cut. I was eyeing your wrap/jacket and really do need one for spring/summer nights to go with my sleeveless dresses, this one is gorgeous! May I ask who made it?
Love the neutral shoes and those earrings! I have the same issue with bracelets and can only wear adjustable ones due to skinny wrists. Be careful on those sidewalks!
Enjoy your day!

Thanks my beautiful friend! I don’t know the maker, I bought it secondhand and it did not have any labels other than the fabric which is silk, and made an Italy.
Yes, skinny wrists.. could be worse! Lol!!
Happy weekend!

You look stunning in this white dress. Loved the earrings too, look perfect on you.

Dear Elle. Hurrah for little victories indeed. You look fabulous in this dress. Do not wear it to any wedding though…you would risk looking better than the bride! I have just been to a wedding myself (of one of my lovely nieces) and was even fussing about what to wear in order not to outshine the mother of the bride (my sister-in-law). Love, Lieske
Elle, this is stunning! I love the white dress on you and how you styled it. You always manage to make everything look so chic!

I would not, and did not look better than the bride! And you probably guessed I did not wear this. I wore my floral maxi and a straw bag ! Cheers to little victories all around!

What a STUNNING piece of styling you look perfect in this satin white dress. Beautiful cut and love the detail. As for cobblestone pavements, agreed they are a total pain to walk in, always stick with flats if I know it’s going to be a bit of a bumpy walk!

Thank you very much Laura. Yes I agree, we must stick to flat shoes as often as possible.

I actually love that white dress and the way you styled it is gorgeous. And oh my I’m glad you were not hurt on that sidewalk. Love the bracelets and a perfect summer day white dress! Cheers ELLE❣️
How very sweet of you Leila,
Yes the crack in the sidewalk was truly scary. I will always be very conscientious from now on.

Elle, this dress is perfectly fit for you, for sure! I love a monochromatic look in all white. And that jacket is stunning. Pockets on any dress are such a great added bonus. You are absolutely beautiful, my friend. Just please do watch those sidewalk cracks! Or stay perched in that safe haven of your rooftop terrace where you can barely see the cracks in the sidewalk or in the human race, for that matter! I would kind of like a place like that…where the cracks in the human race are not visible. That would be nice. But alas, in… Read more »
You are so sweet reply was such a lovely comment. Yes it is very safe on my rooftop terrace and very lovely. But I love to be on the sidewalk with the wonderful melting pot that is Manhattan. I just wish they were fewer homeless people and less cracks in the sidewalk.
Have a great week my friend!

This is such a dreamy, and elegantly beautiful dress on you dear! I absolutely love the intricate details and the sophisticated and neat look. So perfect on you!
