Investment dressing has been a viable concept for many years. A goal for many, but a notion that it a bit out of step with today’s instant gratification culture. Indeed, the culture now seems to want the new , shiniest trend at all costs.
Lets break this down a bit. The common perception is that investment dressing is prohibitively expensive. However, in reality the reverse is often true. Once, I bought an Hermes Kelly in a reptile skin. It seems like, and was, an expensive buy at the time. However, you should know that while I bought the bag at $1400 USD, I was able to sell it 4 years later for $3200.
Picturing this purchase in this way, one can see that this was in fact a true investment. Was the bag expensive ? Yes, but NO! Better than free, I was paid to wear it!
In that vein, I am featuring a red Hermés dress that I bought second-hand at Michael’s Consignment 8 years ago. Valentine’s Day was in full bloom, so I wore it to a Galentine’s day celebration at the Four Seasons near me. Below, this shot is grainy, as it came from a camera phone not as advanced as my own. However, I think you get the vibe.
Snake themed jewelry is trending now, but I have older pieces in this look. I will confess that this piece is new, but my taste over time stays the same. So readers, I shall wear it for many years to come.
Statement necklaces and I have a long and enduring relationship. LOL!
Authentic Hermés is always the finest quality. Perhaps I could sell the slip for more than I paid for the dress?
Yes, I do believe so. Instead, my daughter shall get this dress and will wear it beautifully! Truly this is investment dressing in action!
Oh course I know you are wondering about the necklace! I am a high-low buyer and stylist.
I found this stunner at T.J.Maxx, in walking distance from my home! ( NO plastic bags or boxes needed)
My friend and I were hoping to enjoy lunch at The Garden. However, graced with a sunny day, we ambled a bit on the way. What can I say, the sun was shining! When we arrived, the Garden has closed so we ate a light lunch at the luxurious bar. Ty Bar is luxurious but homey.
The fireplace was welcoming and warm.
Before we left for lunch, my doorman took a quick snap of me and my friend.
Having given my friend some silly glasses to wear ( last seen here) this happened!
I will stay youthful and happy as long as I can still be silly!
After lunch I wanted to check out one of my favorite luxury brands for handbags.
How convenient that it was right there in the hotel! While pricey, these are handmade and good investments.
Below I am checking out a color blocked reptile piece from VBH.
I love the way this color blocked bag pops against my Valentine’s day red outfit!
Information about this lux brand is below. How does it compare to Hermés? Here, the answer is multifaceted. The label is not a household name and that is good because this brand is not copied !
The appeal of the brand is for discerning buyers who prefer a rare handbag, but want to fly somewhat under the radar.
However, a well heeled customer is most likely aware of this brand. Of course, the prices are notably less than a comparable model from Hermés.
Investment dressing will always include a well crafted, high quality handbag.
About VBH:
The luxurious VBH line of handbags are produced exclusively in Italy using the finest materials and craftsmanship. These contemporary designs are individually handcrafted, and no detail is overlooked in their creation. In fact, each bag has a limited-edition number engraved on a plaque inside.
You might wonder if this is a sponsored post. It is not. VBH is just one of those covetable brands I see every now and again and never cease to admire.
Later that day, I came home and read the paper. Soon after, hubby and I went out to dinner to celebrate Valentines day. It was romantic ! Even after 37- gulp- Valentine’s days together, Hubby never fails to be thoughtful.
I did change from the red ensemble to a LBD that I will post soon!
So dear readers:
Did you celebrate Galantine’s day or Valentine’s day, or like me, perhaps both ?
Do you also endorse investment dressing, or are you more about shopping in the moment ?
LMK, YOU KNOW HOW !
XOXO, Elle ——
First of all – *gasp* – at that amazing dress! How lovely you look, Elle, and how wonderful to share your Galentine’s pics with us! I do believe in investment dressing, but my mainstays are shoes, jewelry and glasses (and bras!) – those are usually the only items I will pay more $ for. I never mind paying substantially less for a good quality item when it’s secondhand. I’ve never yet found an Hermes here in Victoria (I’m sure there are pieces out there), but I won’t pay just for a name, so I like that you’re promoting those “under… Read more »
I know! I seldom buy retail, but I met a friend there and the necklace just screamed, buy me! I try not to buy items because of, or despite them. My mom was a depression baby, so I am careful buyer. I will splurge, if and only, if I feel like I could get most or all of my money back, if the world turns upside down! The up and coming labels are amazing.. the talent is there, but they aren always lucky… So many places to shop here! Love your clothing purchases. You have a great eye for good… Read more »
You actually have a doorman! That is so chique! A Hermes Birkin bag is the one that I can only dream about! I think it’s the most fantastic, stunning, beautiful bag ever!
Doorman are actually common in city co-ops, and necessary for safety.
Hermes is still my favorite brand.. But I am more of kelly girl, lol!

What a lovely way to spend Valentine’s day! I really like your red dress and I love the high low mix with the necklace – I usually splurge on accessories and save on clothes instead, haha! 🙂
I do like selling bags for more than what I paid for them, although I’ve been doing more buying than selling lately 😉
Hope that your week is going well!

I just love your thoughts on how to make things work for many years from our closets. I can be the worst about wanting something new, yet I already have many wonderful items.
And that necklace?? I can’t believe it’s from TJ Maxx. That’s a stunner with any outfit.
I enjoy seeing how you spend the day, and your antics. You have such a wonderful outlook on life!

What an amazing dress, Elle, and I love the stunning necklace too. I’m usually not much of a splurger – does that word exist at all? – but I’m certainly prepared to spend money if an amazing vintage piece crosses my path. I’m swooning over that colour blocked purse by VBH. You’re very good at spotting these under the radar brands. Oh, and I love that fun photo your doorman made of you and your friend. You’re both looking radiant! xxx
Thanks Ann,
I do like to get candid shots when possible .
There are so many places to shop here, I am able to make some good choices.

Dear Elle, no, I didn’t celebrate VD as this is not usual in my generation in Bavaria. But my husband gifted flowers to me what made me absolutely happy! I agree to 100 % to your opinion how mindfulness investment dressing is. And I see you youthful beauty had a wonderful VD and you look adorable as usual. I know for sure you’ll be youthful at least until you are 110 years!

Yes, I always love flowers!
You have such a beautiful wardrobe, I am sure they will be investments too!

Very very true. I stepped back from fast fashion big time. Though occasionally I do pick up some ff pieces in the summer months. But yes investment, pre-loved and rented. And it seems others too are on board the H&M on 34TH street across from Penn Station is closed. Now an empty store front. Though this also has to do with this so call good economy hmm…

Gorgeous in red! Wow. Love your outfit and that dress is a stunner! I love the snake necklace, so interesting and elegant. The jewelry from TJ maxx is beautiful. Love the colors and the shape. I love bags too and the good ones do stand the test of time! I love the chiffon white bow in you look too! I am cautious in what I buy and I would have to love it. I feel quality over quantity is my motto 🙂
Have a lovely day!

Absolutely yes. Good quality is so important.
If it’s made well it will last many years or decades even.
